Introduction:
There are many programs on television today that are geared towards children.
Some are education while some are not. Besides this fact, children’s education
television can vary greatly in quality. The majority of children’s programming is available through paid access only; this could lead to the conclusion that
this leaves families who are unable or unwilling to pay for subscription
television programming without the benefit of children’s programming of any
quality. However this is not the case – PBS has been a leader in children
educational programming since the advent of television. As an example all of the
programs reviewed here have won or been nominated of multiple awards.
Four out of the five programs reviewed here focus solely
on emergent literacy skills. One show focuses on general school readiness. All
of the shows are based on developmental research on how young children learn
and designed to be the most effective in the areas that they are focusing on.
Each show also has a website and merchandise, such as DVDs, books, games, and
toys, for children based on the shows. There are also show based websites for
parents and educators/caregivers which explain how the shows curriculum where
created and how the parents at. el. can continue improving their child’s
literacy skills with different activities based on the show’s general themes.
It is highly recommended that the adults in the child’s
life which these shows with the child so that they can aid in the learning
progress on the child. It is not necessary to watch all of these programs, as
the child may not be at the correct age/skill set level for them or may not
prefer a certain show. It is also important to remember that the television is
not a babysitter and to engage your child in active play which is important for
learning as well.
Between the Lions
Program Description: This show features a nuclear family
of lions that live in a public library.
Review: Between the
Lions is done in a Sesame Street style
format in regards to puppetry, sketch comedy segments, animation, live action
segments, and musical integration. Unlike Sesame
Street, Between the Lions focuses
solely on reading and emergent literacy skill. As the focus is on reading
readiness, phonemic awareness, phonics, and vocabulary features heavily into
each episode. The show’s secondary characters are based on literary conventions,
the Cliff Hanger, or pop culture puns, the Dixie Chimps. While no longer in
production this program is still in rotation many PBS stations.

Martha Speaks
Program Description: Based on the books series by Susan
Meddaugh. Martha the family dog is fed alphabet soup and learns to speak.
Review: As opposed to the other programs in this review, Martha Speaks intends to solely improve
the oral vocabulary of the intended audience. Each show can contain up to 20
new vocabulary words. Martha interacts with the world around her and often
needs the help of her owner/best friend a little girl named Helen to help her
navigate the human world. This can be seen as a relatable parent/child analog.

Program Description: Taking place in an urban community
puppets and human neighbors and been interacting and learning together since
1969.
Review: One of the earliest children’s educational
programs, and the longest lasting, Done through puppetry, sketch comedy segments,
animation, live action segments, and musical integration, Sesame Street has
been promoting school readiness since 1969. Besides emergent literacy skill, the
show also focuses on basic math and social skills. As the show has grown over
the years Sesame Street has touched on real life issues such as the death of a
loved one and the fear that comes with a natural disaster. The success of
Sesame Street has been either transmitted and translated or duplicated to
countries around the world.

Super Why!
Program Description: This cartoon takes place in
Storyville Village which is located behind the library shelves. A superhero
team, the Super Readers, solve problems in the fairytale universe – for example
why is the Big Bad Wolf big and bad. Each problem is solved use a verity of literacy
skills.
Review: Of all the shows reviewed Super Why! incorporates the most emergent literacy skills. As with
all superhero teams each team member has his or her own super power. The viewer
is also included as a member of the team and is also given a super power. Below

Program Description: In WordWorld all the characters (WordFriends) and inanimate objects
(WordThings) are made of the letters that make up the character/object. For example,
the character Frog is made of the letter F, R, O, and G.
Review: WordWorld
is designed to improve four areas of emergent literacy skills: print awareness,
phonological sensitivity/letter knowledge, comprehension, and socio-emotional
skills. By doing this with bright colors, fun games, songs, and relatable
storylines WordWorld allows young children to experience the beginnings of
literacy.
