Sea of Dreams Written & Illustrated by Dennis Nolan

Nolan, Dennis. Sea of Dreams. New York: Roaring Brook Press, 2011. Print. 40 pages

Age Group:
2 to 4 years
Book Format:
Picture Book
Annotation:
A young girl is on the beach and builds a sand castle. Once she is gone lights appear in the castle windows. Little people are in the castle and go on a boating adventure.
Personal Reaction:
One of the most beautifully colored picture book this reviewer has ever seen and the whole book allows for multiple retellings that spark the imagination. One controversial element I foresee is that the young girls is on the beach alone, without anyone else around. This is not a safe portrayal for children and adults of 2-4 year olds should discuss the safety issue of this behavior.

Early Literacy Skills Enhancements:
This wordless books allows a child to develop print motivation, the desire to read, narrative skills, and vocabulary by creating their own narration to the illustrations to build upon visual literacy skills
