Red Hat. Written & Illustrated by Lita Judge

Judge, Lita. Red Hat. New York: Atheneum Books for Young Readers, 2013. Print. 30 pages.

Age Group:
0 to 3 years
Book Format:
Picture Book
Annotation:
An almost wordless picture book that shows what happens when a group of forest animals’ play with a child’s red had and all that is left is a long red string.
Personal Reaction:
Love the facial expressions on the animals and the words that make up the sounds they make when each has a turn playing with the hat.  My favorite is when the child discovers the long red string and creates something for each of the animals as well as a new hat for himself.  Children will love this part as well and I can foresee them wanting to do something for the animals in their neighborhood.
Keywords/Tags:
Fiction, Hats, Forest Animals, Animal Infancy.
Early Literacy Skills Enhancements:
Noticing the wonderful illustrations and determining what is happening in each will help enhance Visual Literacy Skills. Vocabulary skills will broaden determining what sounds the animals are making.  Narrative skills will grow by retelling the story.
